SESSION OUTLINE
Session outline & speaker biography.
Stephen Morgan
Managing Director, Squiz UK
DAY ONEMonday 26th October 20099.15am - 10.00am
Stephen has over 10 years experience in the document, content and knowledge management business. Before Squiz he worked for American Express, Canon and ran an international network of offices for Wilcom.
"Everything Old is New Again"
Squiz has been very busy opening offices in Europe and now the USA. Both markets hold lessons for us but the main shock has been the shock of the old. What do we mean by this? In Europe Marketing Managers are embracing the concept of multi-vitiate testing and optimisation. This is an old idea being applied in a new way. Any direct marketer worth their salt knows how to run A/B testing and campaign optimisation by demographics, etc. It's just that now Marketers have the tool sets to apply these online in new and challenging ways. Likewise, in America, all we hear about is provision of services via a SaaS model. Again; an old idea being applied in new and exciting ways.
What this all adds up to is the realisation that the technology has matured. All the top systems like MySource Matrix allow us to do what we want on the web. The thinking now is about how these technologies can be applied to deliver ROI (return on investment) through increased sales, profitability and customer retention. This session looks at some of Squiz UK's clients in Europe and the USA as case studies to illustrate how they are applying old ideas in new and exciting ways to deliver better ROI from the web investments.

"Of Search and Searchability"
(Funnelback Capabilities)Effective search is a vital ingredient of successful content management. Failed search leads to lost productivity, reduced competitiveness and falling short of publishing, education and campaign goals. A successful search project requires effective result ranking, but must also respond to the needs of different audience groups and the fact that a high proportion of queries will be sub-optimal: too broad, too narrow, misspelled or just mis-targeted. Organisations and their managers can achieve success by helping customers, clients and employees to succeed in their information and service seeking activities. Network permitting, the talk will include a series of live demos illustrating how this has been done in a number of successful search projects.

"Not so simple of Simple Edit Interface"
Many CMS, MySource Matrix included, offer ‘simple edit’ options available through web interfaces, but Simplicity is complicated.
This presentation will take two points of view on the development of MySource Matrix simple edit interfaces.
From the developer perspective; What lessons have we learnt from developing Simple Edit Intefaces; What are the key considerations when producing a simple edit interface? And finally what tools are available to MySource Matrix front end developers when developing Simple Edit Interfaces?
From the business owner perspective; Is it possible to make available to the content author a web interface that enables them to perform a satisfactory number of tasks? Without investing in an extraordinary level of development, is it possible to separate authors from the administrative functions of Matrix in a manner that can be sustained by a small technical team operating in a distributed authoring environment? The University of Tasmania has aimed for this. Have we done enough?
