Squiz has Brush with the law

Leading Australian web solutions provider Squiz recently developed a new website for Brush Farm Corrective Services Academy leveraging the existing Corrective Services NSW (CSNSW) implementation of MySource Matrix CMS to incorporate a new online course calendar that spans hundreds of courses.

Located on the historically significant Brush Farm Estate, the Corrective Services Academy enjoys magnificent landscaped grounds close to the geographic centre of Sydney. The main objective of the project was to deliver a website which expressed the academy’s beautiful surroundings and unique environment without the rigid correctional look and feel of Brush Farm’s governmental legacy, better reflecting the commercial nature of the business.

Squiz created a script to automatically import a file directly from the department training system into MySource Matrix, which in turn updates the online course calendar for the hundreds of courses offered at the academy. The system tracks metadata associated with the individual courses and subsequently displays the appropriate legend which clearly conveys course details such as who is eligible to attend, whether there is a residential component and whether there is an eLearning component. Squiz ensured this critical section of the website is very easy to maintain with a low management overhead.

Another Squiz designed feature of the website is the flexible system that automatically updates and displays both current and archive versions of the Australasian Journal of Correctional Staff Development. This functionality was also reused for the ecoNEWS - an electronic newsletter which features news, views, people, technology, hints and achievements - saving CSNSW the cost of additional development.

A bonus for CSNSW is that staff already trained in the use of MySource Matrix can immediately update the Brush Farm site and because the project leverages off the existing technical infrastructure and instance of MySource Matrix (without the penalty of extra licensing fees) Squiz could deliver a more cost effective solution to CSNSW.

One of the benefits of this fully integrated web solution for CSNSW is that by providing an easy to use online course calendar, correctional staff members are informed about their eligibility for, and the availability of, the many training courses offered at the facility. This also extends to the wider community of NSW Government staff who have an interest in these courses.
