Squiz CMS solution drives Westminster Abbey website for Royal Wedding

28th April 2011

Leading Australian web content management solutions provider Squiz is delighted to be playing a part in delivering news on the Royal Wedding between HRH Prince William & Catherine Middleton. The Westminster Abbey website utilises the Squiz developed Squiz Suite for both the main website and also a special wedding day website with extraordinary hosting scaling provisions in place to ensure the site will cope with the massive surge in traffic expected on the big day. As part of the scaling provisions, all video and live content on the day will be served through the Amazon cloud, making the whole experience engaging yet cost effective for Westminster Abbey to achieve.

Before the Squiz implementation, the Abbey’s website updates (no matter how small) had been done by an external company as it had no formal content management functionality. Imogen Levy, Online Editor at the Abbey, said: “A change used to take anything up to a week to be implemented, so we needed something more immediate. We also wanted to improve the promotion of our assets and open up new opportunities for customer engagement. The new site needed to satisfy the needs of non-English speaking patrons too and be able to flex with the needs of the business.”

Imogen was able to make the site completely responsive to how the user will access the site on the day. Using the latest web standards, HTML5 and CSS3, the website scales to fit any browser or device resolution. Try making your browser smaller and you will see it ends up on the mobile phone design automatically. The fully redesigned website delivered by Squiz Matrix also features an updated set of archives, news section and an online shop that sit alongside an events calendar, social bookmarking buttons, foreign language sections, a Twitter plug-in and regular podcasts. Since the new website has been online, visitor numbers have increased by a whopping 30% and repeat visits are also on the rise.

Squiz Managing Director John-Paul Syriatowicz said “Squiz UK Director Steve Morgan and his team have done a great job on the Westminster Abbey website and we are thrilled to be playing a small part in getting information to a hungry public during this exciting time.”

About Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey is one of the world’s greatest churches, a designated World Heritage Site and ‘Royal Peculiar’, which means the Dean is directly answerable to the monarch. The coronation of Kings and Queens has taken place here since 1066, and many of the nation’s Kings and Queens are buried in the Abbey. Principal among them is St Edward the Confessor, King of England from 1042 to 1066, whose shrine is at the heart of the Abbey. Also buried or memorialised here are over 3,000 great men and women from almost every century of these islands’ history: statesmen and politicians, lawyers, warriors, clerics, writers, artists and musicians.
